"MY HEART WILL GO ON"
7th and 8th Grade
Composed by James Horner
Arranged for Virtual Handbells by Keith Adams.
In Quarter 3, the 7th and 8th Grade Music class practiced several pieces for the Handchimes, including this instrumental arrangement of "My Heart Will Go On" -- the recognizable song from the 1997 film, Titantic. In our Quarter 4 virtual learning, students used a "Handbell App" on their mobile devices to play their individual notes. Over the course of three weeks, students filmed their individual performances while watching a play-a-long practice video constructed for the class. All filmed student performances have been edited together to complete our final performance of this piece.

"JUNK BAND (FROM HOME)"
6th Grade, Quarter 4
Each Quarter in 6th Grade Music, students explore improvisation, timbre, notation, and rhythm through playing in our class "Junk Band". To accomplish this in virtual learning mode, students selected house-hold items to use as instruments. Performing along with a practice video, students then filmed themselves playing both written and improvised rhythms. After combining each student video, the final result is a virtual jam session, featured below!

"A SIMPLE SONG OF JOY"
6th Grade, Quarter 3
Composed by Michael R. Keller
Just one day before students left the campus for indefinite virtual learning, the 6th Grade Quarter 3 Music Class recorded a performance of our selected handchimes piece "A Simple Song of Joy". Seeing the students playing together is indeed a simple joy.

Student Projects
THE CLASSICAL MUSIC PROJECT
7th and 8th Grade
Podcast on "String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), by Luigi Boccherini"
by Micah (8th Grade)

Podcast on "String Quintet in E major, Op. 11, No. 5 (G 275), by Luigi Boccherini"
by Micah (8th Grade)
For our first virtual project, students chose one piece of Classical Music to research. After researching, they were tasked to create either a Podcast, Historical Reenactment, Fancy Google Slide, or an Instructional Video to teach the rest of the class about the piece. Above is Micah's Podcast on the recognizable, but often forgotten, Boccherini String Quintet.
THE FILM SCORING PROJECT
7th and 8th Grade
7th and 8th Grade
For our final Project in Quarter 4, we studied the relationship between film and music, and explored the narrative power of combining these mediums. Students were given a list of 10 clips to watch from Silent Films. Each student chose one clip, mapped out their plans for scoring, and then designed music and sound effects to accompany the footage. Here are a few examples:
Harry 8th - The Haunted House (1908)
Evan 7th - Sherlock Jr. (1924) |
Avery 7th - "Safety Last!" (1923)

Original Compositions and Recordings
Throughout the second semester, students have been arranging, composing, and recording music through our Recording projects, Songwriting projects, Hip-Hop projects, and Film Scoring projects. Below, listen to several pieces created by students!
Kellye 7th - "Ringtone"
|
Evan 7th - "The Message"
For our Hip-Hop Projects, students analyzed and recreated Grandmaster Flash's classic beat: "The Message". Using Garageband, students learned to analyze, program, rearrange, and mix each instrument -- one sound at a time -- to recreate the beat. Students then arranged and mixed the final product according to their own taste. Check out Evan's rendition: |
Kai 8th
Kai is a student from Semester 1 who continues to write original music. Check out these 3 new pieces he produced this Spring in Quarantine, under the name "DR.BOOM"
