“The purpose of our lives is to be happy”- Dalaï Lama. This quote helps us understand why we have dogs. Their companionship and love are nothing like humans. There is a bond and it is unconditional love. Their smiles light up your day and they will be there when no one else is. This is my dog, Jack. He is always smiling and giving everyone he meets kisses. Although it is a plain photo of my dog, I wanted to make something that I would smile when I saw it. The finished product was much more rewarding when a happy face was smiling back.
One thing I really enjoy (other than his big smile) is the contrast of his tongue and the rest of the drawing. I decided to make the background a more boring color because of this. I want the tongue to pop out when you look at the photo. This is because the tongue is the center of the photo and his smile.

I really like the idea that you can find shapes in anything. I utilize this concept in the landscapes I create, telling a story with simple lines and geometric figures. I also really enjoy making art with contrast and repetition, using heavy line art to accent and emphasize the shapes of the figures I draw. I like using this concept in animation too, telling stories and creating personalities using simple motions and characters. A lot of my pieces don’t turn out the exact way I expect them to, but that’s the fun of art — improvising and creating along the way.

The messages that are conveyed through the pieces I play can greatly vary. It all depends on the inner workings of each specific song. For Instance, the tempo, dynamics, time signature, clefs, major Vs. minor, etc. These elements all play a very important role in the song and greatly affect the mood or messages that come from each piece. The spirit that is communicated through every piece I play has a personnel meaning to me. I feel a connection to the emotions and stories that I work to express as I play. I feel as if I am one with the music as I am playing it and it feels special, as well as fun. It is like a journey I can go on whenever I would like and feel excitement, fear, joy, and sorrow. It is like a roller coaster one can take to feel certain emotions and travel away in their mind, while still being there. I hope other people can feel the stories as I play and think about the different emotions I am trying to convey with each song. A good location for my piece to be displayed would be a nice place where people can gather to listen to my music comfortably as I am playing. Possibly some kind of stage or corner in a hallway where people are walking, or other space where people can gather or somehow listen to my music. Since we are currently in a pandemic, the best space for people to listen to my music would probably be somewhere online or in a space where people could safely social distance, like a park. Hopefully, they will enjoy it and sit back and relax, as I take them on an adventure. These kinds of spaces would be a good location for my performances because there is space for me to play my instrument and for people to gather around or listen using social distancing.

I accept my progress, but I Strive for more. This quarter was meant to help me expand my talent to skill. I feel like I improved, but I want to do more I want to give people emotion while looking at my art. My plan was never to become an artist, I want money, not fame, but now I want to give people a motive like what people in this class did for me.

My goal was to draw birds better. I think I succeeded in my goal. Over the course of time I drew more detailed parts of birds and in the end added all I drew into one drawing. I think an area that needs improvement is the shading. My art has improved but it’s not perfect.

One of the pieces that you are about to hear is called Für Elise by Beethoven. While it is very famous and oftentimes overplayed, I have found myself falling under its hypnotic sound as a pianist. It is three pages, and has some relatively difficult parts. I had tried to learn this piece in fifth grade, but had unfortunately hit an impasse. This year it was my goal to complete this song; so I hope you enjoy all of my hard work.
Independent Study of the Arts has been a great class to take, for it allows you to branch off into your own creativity. There is no definite plan, which creates a sense of ease and relaxation. Everyone in this class was quite comical, kind, and supportive. I would definitely recommend this class to whoever wants to hone in on their craft (arts wise). It’s been a great two semesters—even with virtual school—and I hope to find classes as enjoyable as this one in high school.
Another piano piece you will find that I have been working on during this class is called Prelude: The Polish Dance by Frederic Chopin. It is a very short piece, but slow and sweet. I definitely recommend this song for anyone who needs to relax. It allows you to close your eyes and breath.
All in all, I had an amazing year in every one of my classes! Eight grade is an amazing experience I wouldn’t exchange for the world, and I am so glad that my piano pieces will finally be showcased. I hope everyone has a great summer;)
